  • A professor of orthopaedics connected to the Institution of clinical sciences and orthopaedic department, University of Gothenburg.
  • A member of the Cartilage Research Unit at the University of Gothenburg and an orthopedic surgeon at Region Halland Orthopaedics (Varberg Hospital).
  • A focused researcher on cartilage repair and with main focus on in vitro expanded autologous chondrocytes.
  • The Inventor of Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation Technique (ACI).
  • Had also keen interest in research on biotribology in cartilage and osteoarthritis as well as research collaborations with other centres and companies in Europe and North America.
  • Mats’s interest is now also focused on joint preservation research and studies on joint pain mechanisms.
  • Awarded with The Swedish Medical Association Jubilee Medal in silver 1995.
  • Awarded with the ICRS Genzyme Lifetime Achievement Award in cartilage research (2010).
